UN Chief Welcomes Gaza Reconstruction Efforts, Calls for International Law Adherence

UN chief Antonio Guterres has welcomed the efforts of Donald Trumpโ€™s Board of Peace to fund and deliver basic support for Gaza reconstruction. The initiative aims to rebuild Palestinian homes and infrastructure damaged by ongoing conflicts, Politico reported on Saturday.

In an interview, the UN chief said he supports cooperation with structures created by the Board of Peace. โ€œThere is an objective defined and approved by the Security Council, and we are actively cooperating,โ€ Guterres noted.

However, the UN chief emphasized that the board alone cannot solve broader challenges in the region. He stated, โ€œThis is not the effective way to address the dramatic problems we face now. International law and the values of the UN Charter remain essential in any peace initiative.โ€

Guterres also highlighted the need to end Iranโ€™s closure of the Strait of Hormuz. He suggested that the UN could help protect the strategic waterway and support a plan to reduce tensions and prevent further attacks in the region.

The UN chief noted that he had not spoken directly with President Trump since the start of the war but has communicated with other US administration officials. He stressed that multilateral cooperation is key to achieving lasting peace and stability.

The Gaza reconstruction plan backed by the Board of Peace seeks to provide immediate relief while rebuilding critical infrastructure. It has been approved by the UN Security Council, and international partners are expected to participate in its implementation.

UN chief Guterres reiterated the importance of following international law while coordinating aid and reconstruction efforts. He said clarity on legal obligations and UN principles is vital to ensure peace initiatives are effective and sustainable.
