LONDON: A 43-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of murder after an 18-day-old baby girl died following a fall from height at a residential flat in Westminster.
Police confirmed the woman was arrested at a Horseferry Road property on Saturday morning, March 14. She remains in custody as detectives investigate the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death.
Officers were called to the scene at around 7:30 am after reports that the newborn had fallen. Paramedics attended immediately, providing emergency care and transferring the child to hospital. Sadly, the baby was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell described the incident as “extremely tragic” and confirmed the event likely occurred within a domestic setting. She urged anyone with information to come forward.
“Our thoughts are with the baby’s family,” Foxwell said. “This is a tragic occurrence, and urgent enquiries are ongoing. We believe this happened within a domestic context, and anyone with information should contact us.”
A police cordon was established along Great Peter Street near Horseferry Road while forensic teams examined the flat. Officers in protective suits were seen working inside the third-floor Peabody Estate flat. Traffic was diverted in the area to ensure public safety.
The London Ambulance Service confirmed the baby was treated at the scene before being taken to a major trauma centre. Authorities are appealing to the public for witnesses to provide any details that could assist the investigation.
This marks the second high-profile domestic case in London in recent weeks where authorities quickly detained a suspect. Police emphasized that investigations are ongoing and that the woman arrested is cooperating with inquiries.
