LAHORE โ The Traffic Engineering & Transport Planning Agency (TEPA) has announced a major project to improve traffic management in Lahore. The initiative will install smart traffic signals and pelican crossings at 20 key intersections across the city.
Approved by the Punjab Cabinet, the project aims to reduce congestion, enhance pedestrian safety, and improve traffic flow. The new system will use real-time vehicle detection, sensors, and cameras to monitor road conditions efficiently.
The upgraded traffic signals will be linked with the Punjab Safe Cities Authority and Lahore traffic police. This integration allows centralized monitoring and quick response to traffic issues. LED-lit zebra crossings will also be added, increasing visibility for pedestrians, especially during nighttime.
TEPA officials highlighted that the project builds on the success of a pilot program on Mall Road. The pilot demonstrated that smart traffic management can significantly reduce delays and improve safety for both drivers and pedestrians.
City planners expect that this project will not only streamline traffic but also reduce road accidents in Lahore. Officials noted that smart signals will adapt to real-time traffic conditions, helping manage peak-hour congestion more effectively.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to modernize urban infrastructure and make Lahore a safer, more efficient city for residents and visitors. Authorities aim to complete the installation of all smart signals and crossings within the next year.
With growing traffic challenges, these upgrades represent a significant step toward a โsmart cityโ model. Officials emphasized that public cooperation, including adherence to traffic rules, will be essential for the systemโs success.
