'Bloody' Kite Strings Injure Two in Lahore as Basant Nears

LAHORE: Excitement around Basant in the Punjab capital turned into fear after two serious kite string injuries were reported. The incidents highlighted the dangers linked to kite flying during the festive season.

In the first case, a two-year-old girl suffered a life-threatening neck injury. A razor-sharp kite string cut her throat while she was outdoors. The child, identified as Zainab Fatima from Kasur, was rushed to Jinnah Hospital in critical condition.

Doctors at the hospitalโ€™s S-3 Unit performed emergency throat surgery. The operation was carried out immediately to save her life. Medical staff said the injury was extremely severe and required urgent attention.

After the surgery, the toddler was shifted to the plastic surgery department. She is now receiving further treatment to repair damaged tissues. Doctors confirmed that her condition has stabilized due to timely medical care.

Prof. Dr. Tayyaba Wasim, Principal of Allama Iqbal Medical College, shared an update on the childโ€™s health. She said Zainab is under constant medical supervision. A special medical board is monitoring her recovery closely. Hospital sources added that the child is showing gradual improvement.

In another incident linked to Basant, a young man was seriously injured in Lahoreโ€™s Green Town area. The victim, identified as Awais, suffered a deep neck cut from a sharp kite string. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital.

Doctors stitched the wound to control bleeding. As a precaution, X-rays of his cervical spine were also conducted. Medical officials confirmed that no additional internal damage was found. Awais is now in stable condition and recovering.

These incidents once again exposed the hidden dangers of kite flying. Basant, often seen as a colorful cultural celebration, can become deadly due to the use of metallic and razor-edged strings. Such strings can cause severe injuries to pedestrians, motorcyclists, and children.

Medical professionals have urged citizens to remain cautious during the kite-flying season. They stressed that children are especially vulnerable to such accidents. Authorities have also reminded the public about existing restrictions on harmful kite strings.
