Pakistan Super League (PSL) is set to introduce a player auction for the first time in its history, marking a major shift in team formation. Most franchises have already expressed support for this new system, which aims to make player selection fairer and more competitive.
In a recent meeting with PSL CEO Salman Naseer, franchise owners agreed to adopt the auction format, moving away from traditional player retention methods. The implementation will take place after approval from the Chairman Board, signaling a new era for the league.
To ensure a smooth transition, a special workshop will be held for team owners to explain the auction process and procedures. Officials described the move as a “revolution” in how PSL teams are built, giving both existing and new franchises opportunities to strengthen their squads.
Currently, all five existing PSL franchises are requesting the right to retain four players, including their brand ambassador, to protect star players and maintain team identity. Meanwhile, new franchises are advocating for zero retention, arguing that an open auction ensures fairness and equal opportunity for all teams. The final decision on this issue will be made by the Chairman Board.
During Friday’s PSL Governing Council meeting at the National Cricket Academy, Chairman Mohsin Naqvi encouraged team owners to embrace the open auction format, emphasizing its benefits for players. The council also discussed player retention rules, the auction system, and the schedule for PSL Season 11.
A working group will meet this weekend to finalize remaining details. PCB officials stated that PSL is entering a phase of expansion and transformation, with new teams, updated structures, and a fresh timeline for the upcoming season.
With the player auction, the PSL promises a more transparent and competitive system, giving emerging and existing players equal opportunities. Fans are eagerly anticipating the auction, which is expected to bring excitement, high-profile signings, and new dynamics to the league.
