OGDCL, PPL Announce Third Oil and Gas Discovery in KP This Month

ISLAMABAD – Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) and Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) announced a significant oil and gas discovery at the Baragzai X-1 well in Kohat district, marking a strong start to the year for Pakistan’s energy sector.

The Baragzai X-1 well is expected to produce 3,100 barrels of oil per day and 81.5 million standard cubic feet of gas daily. OGDCL holds a 65% working interest in the project, while PPL owns 30%. The remaining 5% stake is held by Government Holdings (Private) Limited, officials confirmed.

Third Discovery in Less Than a Month

This is the third oil and gas discovery in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by OGDCL and PPL in under a month, signaling an encouraging start to 2026. Combined, the three discoveries have yielded 9,500 barrels of oil and 24.2 million standard cubic feet of gas, significantly boosting regional energy potential.

Both companies have formally updated shareholders on the latest findings through official disclosures, highlighting the continuing success of exploration activities in the province.

More Discoveries Expected in Hangu

Energy experts expect additional oil and gas discoveries in the coming weeks, particularly from the Lockhart and Lamshiwal formations in Hangu district. Exploration activities in these areas are ongoing and may further enhance domestic production.

Positive Outlook for Pakistan’s Energy Sector

The consecutive discoveries are seen as a major positive for Pakistan’s oil and gas industry, which has faced declining production and rising imports. Officials say sustained exploration success by OGDCL and PPL could help reduce import dependence, strengthen energy security, and support the national economy.
