ISLAMABAD โ The Senate has passed the Anti-Electronic Crimes Amendment Bill with stricter punishments for serious online offenses. The updated law increases penalties related to child pornography and other cybercrimes.
Under the new amendment, the prison term for producing or distributing child pornography has been raised. Offenders can now face up to 10 years in jail. Earlier, the maximum sentence was seven years. The fine has also been doubled. It has increased from Rs5 million to Rs10 million.
Lawmakers said the step is part of broader efforts to strengthen Pakistanโs cybercrime laws. The government aims to improve the legal system to better handle online crimes. Officials believe stronger penalties will act as a deterrent.
The amendment also focuses on improving international cooperation. The Senate approved another bill to enhance mutual legal assistance treaties. These agreements will help Pakistan work with countries where social media companies are registered. This move is expected to support investigations involving online platforms and cross-border cybercrime.
Authorities say crimes like child pornography often involve international networks. Better cooperation with foreign governments will help track suspects and gather digital evidence. Officials stressed that global coordination is essential in modern cybercrime cases.
In another major development, the Senate approved changes to criminal laws related to sexual assault cases. The amendment makes medical examinations for victims mandatory. If authorities fail to arrange a medical exam, they can face one year in prison and a fine.
The new law also places clear responsibilities on hospitals. Both public and private hospitals must provide immediate medical assistance to rape victims. Private hospitals are legally required to transfer victims to government hospitals within 24 hours.
Lawmakers said these steps aim to protect victims and ensure timely medical care. Quick medical exams are important for collecting evidence and supporting victims.
The Senate also passed other important bills. Senator Samina Zehriโs Family Court Amendment Bill was approved. The bill seeks to improve procedures in family law cases. Another bill, introduced by Senator Sherry Rehman, bans plastic covers on books in Islamabad. The measure addresses environmental concerns.
