Iran Ready for Nuclear Deal If United States Lifts Sanctions

Iran has expressed readiness to compromise on its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of US sanctions, a senior official said. Majid Takht-Ravanchi, deputy foreign minister, spoke in a BBC interview published Sunday.

Takht-Ravanchi’s remarks came as nuclear talks between Iran and the United States resumed in Oman on February 6. He indicated that Tehran is prepared to negotiate the dilution of its highly enriched uranium stockpile, a key aspect of its nuclear program.

Switzerland announced a new round of nuclear discussions will be held in Geneva next week. Although the exact date is unconfirmed by Iran, Takht-Ravanchi said the talks are likely to take place on Tuesday, according to the BBC.

Western nations, led by the US and Israel, have accused Iran of pursuing nuclear weapons. Iran denies these allegations, insisting that its nuclear activities are for civilian energy purposes.

Takht-Ravanchi emphasized that Iran is willing to compromise, including potentially reducing or shipping out parts of its 400-kilogram stockpile of 60-percent enriched uranium. He noted that such a step depends on the US showing sincerity by lifting sanctions that have severely impacted Iran’s economy.

“If we see sincerity on their part, I am sure we will be on a road to have an agreement,” he said. He added that it is too early to confirm any decisions on the uranium stockpile. Some countries, including Russia, have offered to manage the stockpile, but Iran has so far declined.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reports that Iran’s enrichment at 60 percent far exceeds the 3.67 percent limit under the 2015 nuclear deal, approaching the 90 percent level needed for weapons-grade material. However, Tehran maintains that its nuclear program remains peaceful.

The upcoming nuclear talks are also expected to cover potential US investments in Iran’s energy sector, signaling broader economic discussions alongside nuclear negotiations.\

Iran’s willingness to compromise highlights the delicate balance between advancing its civilian nuclear program and easing economic pressure through sanctions relief. The world is closely watching these developments as nuclear negotiations continue.
