Turkey Seeks MI6 Help to Protect Syrian President Sharaa from IS Threats

Turkey has reportedly asked British intelligence to help strengthen protection for Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa after several alleged assassination plots. The request reflects growing concerns about security in Syria as militant threats continue to emerge.

According to officials familiar with the matter, Turkey’s intelligence agency contacted the United Kingdom’s foreign intelligence service, MI6, last month. The aim was to increase security cooperation and intelligence sharing to protect Syrian leadership.

The request came as Syria continues to face instability following years of civil conflict. The overthrow of former Syrian president Bashar al‑Assad left the country struggling to rebuild its political and security systems. Although a new leadership structure is forming, militant groups remain active in some regions.

Officials say Turkey views President Ahmed al-Sharaa as a key figure in stabilizing Syria. International allies believe his leadership could help prevent a return to civil war or sectarian violence. Syria’s long conflict displaced millions of people and allowed extremist groups to expand their influence.

Security concerns have grown after the militant group Islamic State reportedly increased attacks on Syrian security forces. The group has also declared Sharaa one of its main targets. Intelligence sources say several assassination attempts were prevented in recent months.

Sources indicated that Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization has played an important role in supporting the Syrian government’s security efforts. Turkish officials reportedly asked MI6 to take a larger role in intelligence cooperation and protection planning.

It remains unclear what specific support MI6 may provide. However, analysts say the cooperation could include intelligence sharing, security planning, and technical assistance. No official confirmation has been issued by either government.

Reports also suggest the request followed a suspected assassination plot discovered earlier this year. Security agencies from Turkey, Syria, and allied countries have been sharing intelligence to prevent attacks.

In recent weeks, Syrian authorities acknowledged cooperation with Turkish intelligence in stopping a planned militant operation in Damascus. Officials said a team preparing remote bomb attacks was identified and stopped before the assault could occur.

Western officials say the renewed activity by the Islamic State group has raised alarms among regional and international partners. Intelligence agencies are closely monitoring the situation as Syria attempts to rebuild after years of conflict.

Security cooperation between Turkey, Britain, and other allies may play an important role in preventing further instability in the region. Officials believe protecting Syria’s leadership is critical for maintaining stability during this fragile period.
