PMD has dismissed concerns about the possibility of “black rain” in Pakistan following recent attacks on oil fields in Iran. Officials say the situation does not pose a threat to the country.
Reports circulating on social media raised fears that smoke and oil particles from the strikes could travel into Pakistan. However, the PMD clarified that such claims are not supported by scientific analysis.
Deputy Director Irfan Virk explained that a western weather system is expected to enter Pakistan through Iran in the coming days. This system may carry dust and small particles, which could slightly affect air quality in some regions.
Despite these conditions, the PMD stressed that there is no possibility of black rain in Pakistan. According to Virk, oil particles released during the attacks will not travel long distances.
He said that the pollutants are expected to disperse within about 100 kilometers from the source. This means the particles will break down and spread before reaching Pakistan.
The PMD also noted that weather systems moving across the region can carry dust from neighboring areas. However, such dust storms are common and usually do not cause serious environmental problems.
Experts added that any temporary change in the air quality index would likely be minor. Authorities say the situation does not present any unusual risk to public health.
As a precaution, the PMD has instructed its regional offices to monitor rainfall coming from the western weather system. Officials have been asked to collect water samples from rain that arrives through Iran.
These samples will be tested to detect any possible pollutants. The PMD says this step is part of its routine environmental monitoring procedures.
Officials explained that testing rainfall helps ensure public safety and provides accurate scientific data. The process allows meteorologists to track any changes in atmospheric conditions.
The PMD emphasized that the monitoring system helps authorities respond quickly if environmental concerns arise. So far, no evidence suggests that harmful substances will reach Pakistan.
Authorities urged the public not to rely on rumors or unverified information on social media. The PMD said official updates from meteorological experts should be trusted for accurate information.
