Pakistan Day was observed across the country on Monday with traditional enthusiasm and patriotic spirit. However, this year’s celebrations were simple, as the government decided not to hold the usual Parade due to austerity measures.
March 23 is an important day in Pakistan’s history. It marks the passing of the Lahore Resolution in 1940. On this day, leaders demanded a separate homeland for Muslims of the subcontinent. The occasion is usually celebrated with a grand Parade in the federal capital.
This year, the Parade was not held due to economic challenges. The government announced austerity steps last week. These measures are linked to the global oil crisis caused by tensions in the Middle East. The rising cost of fuel has affected many countries, including Pakistan.
Despite the absence of the Parade, the day began with gun salutes in federal and provincial capitals. Flag-hoisting ceremonies were also held across the country. These events aimed to honor the importance of Pakistan Day.
In Lahore, a change of guards ceremony took place at the mausoleum of Allama Iqbal. A contingent of the Pakistan Air Force took over ceremonial duties. The event was conducted with dignity and respect.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif shared special messages on the occasion. They congratulated the nation and highlighted the importance of unity and solidarity.
President Zardari said Pakistan Day reminds people of the sacrifices made by founding leaders. He noted that unity is essential for national progress. He also spoke about challenges such as terrorism and regional tensions.
The president emphasized that Pakistan would continue to defend its sovereignty. He also mentioned the situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. He called it an important issue that needs global attention.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the country has made progress despite economic difficulties. He pointed to lower inflation and improved investor confidence as positive signs.
He also described March 23 as a historic milestone. It united Muslims and led to the creation of Pakistan under Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
