Arm Holdings announced a new AI chip on Tuesday, aiming to drive billions of dollars in revenue. The move represents a major shift in the companyโs long-term strategy.
The chip, named AGI CPU, is designed for agentic artificial intelligence, which can act on behalf of users with minimal oversight. Unlike traditional AI that responds to queries, this type of AI requires advanced data-crunching capabilities, increasing demand for high-performance AI chips.
Arm shares initially rose after the announcement but later fell 1.5% in mid-afternoon trading. The companyโs stock has increased 25% so far this year ahead of the new chip release.
For years, Arm, largely owned by Japanโs SoftBank Group, earned revenue through licensing intellectual property to companies like Qualcomm and Nvidia. Under this model, the company received royalties based on unit sales. The AGI CPU is Armโs first in-house chip under a new strategy that includes producing its own hardware.
CEO Rene Haas described the launch as โa very pivotal moment for the company.โ The chipโs development is overseen by Mohamed Awad, head of Armโs cloud AI business, with additional designs expected at 12- to 18-month intervals.
Meta Platforms is Armโs lead partner in designing the AGI CPU. Other customers include OpenAI, Cloudflare, SAP, and SK Telecom. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co will fabricate the device using 3-nanometer technology. The chip combines two silicon pieces that operate as one unit, with volume production planned for the second half of this year. Test chips have already met performance expectations.
In addition to the chip itself, Arm is collaborating with server manufacturers like Lenovo and Quanta Computer to provide complete systems for data centers. Analysts expect Arm to generate $4.91 billion in revenue this fiscal year, with a net profit of $1.75 per share.
The launch of this AI chip positions Arm to compete more directly with Intel and AMD in the growing AI market. By producing its own hardware, Arm aims to diversify revenue streams and strengthen its presence in the AI data center ecosystem.
