ISLAMABAD: Pakistanis may experience an unusually high number of holidays in May 2026. Reports suggest the month could include between 11 and 19 days off.
Officials and observers say the month is shaping up to begin and end with holidays, creating multiple long breaks. These include public holidays, weekends, and expected Eid-ul-Adha vacations.
Interest in the calendar has increased among students, employees, and businesses. Many people are closely watching the schedule due to the high number of holidays expected.
Some institutions observing Friday as a work-from-home day may see the total number of holidays rise further. In such cases, the count could reach up to 19 days. Without Friday off policies, the total may remain closer to 11.
May will start with Labour Day on May 1, which falls on Friday. This will be followed by weekend holidays on May 2 and May 3. This creates an early three-day break for many people.
The second week may also include another long weekend around May 8 to May 10. Similar three-day breaks are expected in the third and fourth weeks of the month. These repeated holidays will provide frequent rest periods throughout May.
The biggest break is expected during Eid-ul-Adha. The festival is likely to fall in the last part of May. Final dates will depend on the sighting of the Dhu al-Hijjah moon.
If the moon is sighted on time, Eid holidays may fall from May 27 to May 29. Combined with weekends, this could create extended holidays of up to five days.
If the moon is not sighted, Eid may shift to May 28 to May 30. In that case, an additional Sunday could extend the break further.
There is also discussion about an extra holiday on May 25. If approved, it could turn the period into a full week of holidays when combined with weekends.
Experts say such a long holiday period may provide mental relief and family time. However, they also warn that excessive holidays could impact productivity and economic activity.
