The Punjab government has introduced a new motorcycle riding permit for teenagers aged between 16 and 18 years. The initiative has been launched under the vision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to encourage safe and legal motorcycle riding among young people.
According to traffic police officials, the new motorcycle riding permit will allow eligible teenagers to ride motorcycles before reaching the age of 18. The move is aimed at improving road safety and increasing compliance with traffic laws across the province.
Officials said that adolescents between 16 and 18 years can apply for the permit after fulfilling the required conditions. The program is designed to promote responsible driving habits at an early age and help young riders better understand traffic regulations.
The fee structure varies according to age. Applicants who are 16 years old will have to pay Rs1,000. Those aged 17 to 18 years will pay a fee of Rs500 for obtaining the motorcycle riding permit.
Lahore Chief Traffic Officer Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi said permit holders will be subject to specific safety restrictions. He stated that young riders will not be allowed to drive motorcycles at speeds above 60 kilometres per hour. The speed limit has been introduced to reduce risks and improve safety on roads.
Parental or guardian approval is a mandatory requirement for all applicants. Officials believe this measure will ensure better supervision and encourage responsible behavior among young riders.
To apply for the motorcycle riding permit, applicants must present their Smart Card and Form-B. They must also be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian during the application process. In addition, parents or guardians must provide a copy of their Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) along with a recent photograph.
Traffic authorities said the initiative will help strengthen the culture of road safety in Punjab. It is also expected to improve awareness of traffic rules among young drivers.
Meanwhile, authorities continue to modernize transport-related services in Pakistan. Earlier, the Excise and Taxation Department in Islamabad introduced an online vehicle ownership transfer facility. The system allows citizens to transfer ownership of cars and motorcycles from home without visiting Excise offices.
