MONTERREY: South Africa made history by reaching the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 for the first time. Bafana Bafana secured a 1-0 victory over South Korea in their final Group A match at Monterrey Stadium.
The win marked a major achievement for South Africa, which had previously failed to advance beyond the group stage in the 1998, 2002, and 2010 FIFA World Cups. The team finished the group phase with four points and earned a place in the knockout rounds.
The only goal of the match came in the 63rd minute. Thapelo Maseko received a well-placed pass from Moremi before cutting onto his left foot. He then fired a low shot into the bottom right corner to beat the goalkeeper and give South Africa the lead.
The goal proved enough to seal a memorable victory. It also secured one of the biggest moments in the country’s football history.
South Korea started the match brightly and nearly scored within the opening two minutes. Kim Min-jae rose to meet a cross with a powerful header, but Aubrey Modiba cleared the ball off the goal line to keep the score level.
Shortly afterward, Lee Kang-in had another opportunity. His effort from inside the penalty area, however, sailed over the crossbar.
As the first half continued, South Africa gradually settled into the game and began creating chances. In the 19th minute, Maseko broke through on goal but was denied by a timely challenge from Lee Gi-hyuk.
Before halftime, Bafana Bafana continued to threaten the South Korean defence. Goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu produced an outstanding double save to stop efforts from Thalente Mbatha and Evidence Makgopa.
The second half produced fewer clear chances for both teams. However, Maseko’s composed finish made the difference and ensured his side claimed all three points.
Following the victory, South Africa will now face co-host Canada in the Round of 32. The knockout match is scheduled to take place in Los Angeles on June 28.
