Razia Mehsud Becomes First Woman Jirga Member in Upper South Waziristan

ISLAMABAD โ€“ Razia Mehsud has made history by becoming the first woman appointed to the Dispute Resolution Council (DRC) in Upper South Waziristan. The appointment marks an important step toward improving women’s access to justice and increasing their participation in local decision-making.

The development has received praise from social workers, tribal leaders, and members of the public. Many believe this decision reflects positive progress for gender inclusion in a region where women have traditionally had very limited roles in administrative and dispute resolution bodies.

According to an official notification issued by the Regional Police Officer (RPO) of the Dera Ismail Khan Region, the new 17-member Dispute Resolution Council has been formed. The council was constituted on the recommendation of Upper South Waziristan District Police Officer (DPO) Arshad Khan.

The latest council includes Razia Mehsud as one of its members. This is the first time since the DRC was established that a woman has been selected to serve on the council. Her appointment is being viewed as a landmark decision for the district and the wider Waziristan region.

Razia Mehsud is known for her work as a social activist. She has been involved in efforts to support local communities and raise awareness about social issues. Her experience is expected to help the council better understand and address disputes involving women.

Officials and community members believe her presence on the council will make it easier for women to present their concerns. Female complainants may feel more comfortable approaching the DRC with their cases. This could improve confidence in the local justice system and encourage greater public trust.

Local activists have welcomed the appointment and described it as a meaningful step toward equal representation. They believe women should have a stronger voice in resolving community disputes and shaping local decisions. Many also expect the move to inspire more women to participate in public service roles.

Tribal elders and public representatives have also expressed support for the decision. They described the appointment as a historic milestone for Upper South Waziristan. According to them, it has the potential to bring positive change across the tribal districts.

Many observers believe the inclusion of Razia Mehsud could encourage similar appointments in the future. They say greater female participation in governance and dispute resolution can strengthen local institutions and improve access to justice for everyone.
