Nepra increases Electricity Tariff By 34 paisas Per Unit

Nepra increases Electricity Tariff By 34 paisas Per Unit

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved a fresh electricity tariff revision, raising power rates by 34 paisas per unit for consumers across Pakistan. The latest decision increases electricity costs under the monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism for May 2026.

According to an official notification issued by the regulator, the revised charges will apply to electricity consumers nationwide, including customers served by K-Electric in Karachi.

The additional amount will be included in electricity bills issued for July 2026.

The latest decision increases the cost of electricity through the monthly fuel cost adjustment (FCA), which allows power tariffs to be revised based on fluctuations in fuel expenses during electricity generation.

Fuel cost adjustments are implemented periodically to reflect changes in the cost of producing electricity.

According to Nepra, the increase approved for May 2026 is 34 paisas per unit.

Earlier, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) had requested a larger increase under the same adjustment mechanism.

The CPPA had proposed raising electricity tariffs by 82 paisas per unit for May 2026.

After reviewing the request and relevant data, Nepra approved a lower adjustment of 34 paisas per unit instead.

The regulator’s decision means consumers will pay less than the amount originally requested by the purchasing agency.

However, the revised tariff will still result in higher electricity bills for eligible consumers during July.

Officials said the adjustment applies to consumers throughout the country, including K-Electric users in Karachi.

Monthly fuel cost adjustments are separate from the base electricity tariff approved by the regulator.

These revisions are designed to account for changes in international fuel prices, electricity generation costs and the overall fuel mix used by power producers.

Electricity consumers regularly experience such adjustments depending on market conditions and operational expenses.

The latest notification confirms that the approved amount will be recovered through July electricity bills.

Authorities have not announced any additional changes beyond the approved fuel cost adjustment.

Energy sector experts note that monthly fuel cost adjustments help utilities recover actual generation costs while maintaining the financial stability of the power sector.

However, they also acknowledge that repeated tariff revisions place additional pressure on household and business budgets.

Consumers are encouraged to review their electricity bills carefully to understand any changes resulting from the latest adjustment.

Officials also advise consumers to adopt energy-saving measures to help manage electricity expenses.

Reducing unnecessary power consumption, using energy-efficient appliances and switching off electrical equipment when not in use can help lower monthly bills.

The latest decision increases electricity charges by a smaller amount than initially proposed by the CPPA, but it will still affect consumers across Pakistan.

With the revised tariff now officially notified, electricity users, including K-Electric customers, should expect the additional 34 paisas per unit to appear in their July 2026 bills under the monthly fuel cost adjustment for May 2026.
