Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif leaves for Qatar on Monday to convey condolences to the country’s leadership following the death of former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. The visit reflects the close and longstanding relationship between Pakistan and Qatar.
The prime minister leaves Islamabad to meet Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and express sympathy on behalf of the government and people of Pakistan. Senior officials said the visit highlights the importance both countries place on their strong bilateral ties.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is accompanying the prime minister during the visit. Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar is also part of the Pakistani delegation.
According to government officials, the visit is intended to demonstrate Pakistan’s solidarity with the Qatari leadership, the royal family, and the people of Qatar during a period of national mourning.
Pakistan has also declared July 13 as a national day of mourning in memory of the late former Qatari ruler. The decision reflects the respect Pakistan holds for Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and his contributions to Qatar’s development.
A notification issued by the Cabinet Division stated that national flags will remain at half-mast on government buildings throughout the country. The measure has been taken as a mark of respect for the late leader and to express support for Qatar.
The Pakistani government said it shares the grief of the Qatari leadership and its citizens. Officials extended heartfelt condolences to the royal family and wished strength for those mourning the loss.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is widely recognised for his role in transforming Qatar during his years in office. Under his leadership, the country experienced rapid economic growth, major infrastructure development, and increased global influence.
Government officials noted that his leadership helped strengthen Qatar’s position in regional and international affairs. They also acknowledged his contribution to promoting stability and long-term national development.
The visit comes as Pakistan and Qatar continue to enjoy strong diplomatic, political, and economic relations. Both countries have maintained close cooperation across several sectors, including trade, energy, labour, and investment.
Thousands of Pakistani workers are employed in Qatar and contribute to the country’s economy across different industries. Their presence has further strengthened people-to-people ties between the two nations.
Officials said the high-level visit reflects the importance Pakistan attaches to its friendship with Qatar. They added that maintaining regular diplomatic engagement remains a priority for both governments.
As the prime minister leaves for Doha, the visit is expected to reaffirm mutual respect and cooperation between the two countries. It also provides an opportunity for senior leaders to exchange views on issues of shared interest.
Pakistan and Qatar have frequently supported each other on regional and international matters. Their relationship has continued to grow through regular high-level meetings and expanding economic cooperation.
The Pakistani delegation is expected to return after offering condolences and participating in official engagements related to the mourning period. Officials believe the visit will further strengthen the longstanding friendship between Islamabad and Doha while honoring the legacy of the late former Emir.
