US Introduces 4-Year Limit for Student Visas Under New Immigration Rules

United States has announced major changes to its immigration policy that will affect international students, exchange visitors, and foreign journalists. The new rules, introduced by the Trump administration, place a four-year limit on most Student Visas and introduce stricter conditions for staying in the country.

Previously, many international students were allowed to remain in the United States for the full length of their academic programs under a system known as “duration of status.” This arrangement meant students could stay legally as long as they continued to meet the requirements of their studies.

Under the new policy, that system will end. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued a final rule replacing it with fixed admission periods. Most international students and exchange visitors will now receive permission to stay in the United States for up to four years.

The new regulation will take effect 60 days after it is officially published in the Federal Register, provided it completes the required congressional review process.

The updated rules also introduce several new restrictions for Student Visas. Graduate students will no longer be able to change their educational goals or transfer to another university without first receiving official approval. This change is intended to increase government oversight of student movements between educational institutions.

Another important change affects students after graduation. Previously, graduates had a 60-day grace period to remain in the United States after completing their studies or training. Under the new rules, that period has been reduced to just 30 days. This gives students less time to find employment, apply for another visa category, or make other legal immigration arrangements.

Foreign journalists are also affected by the updated policy. Instead of receiving visas that remain valid for several years, they will now be granted visas for a maximum of 240 days. Journalists from China will face an even shorter limit of 90 days. However, both groups will still be able to apply for extensions if they meet the required conditions.

The changes are part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to tighten immigration controls. In recent years, the administration has increased scrutiny of legal immigration, revoked visas and green cards in some cases, and introduced stricter enforcement measures affecting various groups of foreign nationals.

Government officials defended the new rules by pointing to the growing number of temporary visa holders entering the country. According to DHS, the United States recorded more than 1.8 million admissions under Student Visas during 2024. This represented an increase of more than 11 percent compared with the previous year.

During the same fiscal year, the country also admitted over 500,000 exchange visitors and around 37,300 foreign journalists. Officials argued that the rising number of temporary visa holders has made immigration oversight more challenging. They also noted that some students and exchange visitors remained in the United States for many years under the previous duration of status system.

The latest immigration changes have drawn criticism from some observers and have also renewed diplomatic tensions with Beijing. As the new rules move toward implementation, international students and educational institutions are expected to closely monitor their impact on future study plans in the United States.
