Powerful 7.3-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southern Mexico

A powerful Earthquake measuring 7.3 magnitude struck southern Mexico and parts of Central America on Friday, causing widespread tremors and prompting authorities to issue a tsunami alert for sections of the Pacific coastline.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the Earthquake occurred around 48 kilometers off the coast of Aquiles Serdan, a town in southern Mexico. The quake originated at a relatively shallow depth of 18 kilometers, making the shaking more noticeable across nearby regions.

Strong tremors were felt in the Mexican states of Chiapas and Oaxaca. Residents in neighboring Guatemala and El Salvador also experienced the shaking. People rushed out of homes and buildings as the ground moved, creating moments of fear in several communities.

Despite the strong shaking, authorities have not reported any deaths or serious injuries so far. Emergency teams continued to monitor the situation and assess any possible damage in affected areas.

Following the Earthquake, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a tsunami threat alert for parts of the Pacific coast. The warning prompted local authorities to advise residents living near beaches to move to safer locations until further updates were available.

Officials urged people to stay away from coastal areas as a precaution. Emergency services remained on alert while experts monitored sea conditions for any signs of tsunami activity.

In Tuxtla Gutierrez, the capital of Chiapas, people evacuated buildings after the tremors began. Witnesses described scenes of panic, especially in the city’s taller structures. Many residents gathered in open spaces while officials carried out safety inspections.

Mexican Secretary of the Navy Raymundo Morales later addressed the situation during the presidential press conference. He said that there were no serious effects reported following the Earthquake. Authorities, however, continued to advise the public to remain cautious until all safety checks were completed.

Mexico lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most active seismic zones. The region frequently experiences earthquakes because several tectonic plates meet beneath the Earth’s surface. As a result, emergency response systems are regularly tested to prepare for such natural events.

Government agencies are continuing to monitor the affected areas for aftershocks and any additional risks. Disaster response teams remain ready to assist communities if conditions change.

The latest Earthquake serves as another reminder of the importance of disaster preparedness in earthquake-prone regions. While no casualties have been confirmed, officials continue to encourage residents to follow emergency instructions and remain alert until the tsunami threat is officially lifted.
