ISLAMABAD: The government has simplified registration for its new petrol relief scheme. The move aims to help more eligible citizens receive the subsidy.
Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja announced the details on Monday. She addressed a press conference with senior federal ministers in Islamabad.
The scheme offers a Rs100-per-litre subsidy on petrol. It covers motorcycles, auto-rickshaws and motorcycle rickshaws. Other eligible two-wheelers and three-wheelers are also included.
Cars with engine capacities of up to 800cc can also qualify. However, different ownership requirements apply to cars and smaller vehicles.
Open-transfer vehicles included
Shaza Fatima said motorcycles and rickshaws can qualify under open transfer letters. Their official ownership does not need to be updated first.
Many people in Pakistan buy used vehicles from previous owners. Some motorcycles and rickshaws pass through several owners without official transfers.
Under an open transfer letter, the buyer holds the vehicle and its documents. However, the vehicle may still remain registered under the previous owner’s name.
The government has therefore relaxed the ownership requirement for two-wheelers and three-wheelers. This allows current users to register for the subsidy.
Cars will follow a different rule. Their registration must be in the applicant’s own name.
How to register
Eligible citizens can complete the registration process from home. They must send their 13-digit CNIC number to 9771.
Applicants must also provide their vehicle registration number. They need to include the first letter of the registration province.
The vehicle registration date must also be included in the message. The SIM used for registration must belong to the applicant.
The SIM must also be linked with the applicant’s CNIC. The registration information will undergo verification before approval.
The vehicle registration date will provide another verification check. It will also help prevent fraudulent or stolen vehicle registrations.
Successful applicants will receive a confirmation message. They must then send “TOK” to 9771 before visiting a fuel station.
The response will provide a fuel relief token. Beneficiaries can present the token at a petrol station to receive subsidised fuel.
Monthly subsidy limits
Motorcycle and three-wheeler users can receive subsidies for up to 20 litres monthly. Eligible cars can receive subsidies for up to 30 litres monthly.
Motorcycle and three-wheeler users will receive five-litre fuel tokens. Each transaction will provide a Rs500 subsidy.
Eligible small-car users will receive 10-litre tokens. Each transaction will provide a Rs1,000 subsidy.
Two-wheeler and three-wheeler users can claim the subsidy once weekly. Eligible car users can claim it once every 10 days.
Motorcycles up to 15 years old are eligible under the scheme. Cars can qualify if they are up to 20 years old.
Rs25 billion monthly allocation
Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said the government will allocate Rs25 billion monthly. The funds will support the fuel relief programme.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the scheme to provide financial relief to vehicle users. The programme targets people using smaller vehicles for transport and daily activities.
Officials urged eligible citizens to provide accurate registration information. Incorrect SIM details or vehicle information could prevent successful registration.
