ISLAMABAD: Senator Sherry Rehman has said that no politician wants an emergency to be declared in the country. She also claimed that the PTI had missed a major opportunity to find a way out of the current political situation.
Speaking during a debate on Articles 232 and 234 at a joint sitting of Parliament, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) senator criticised the provincial leadership of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). She said the party had lost a valuable opportunity to resolve the situation.
Rehman argued that the provincial leadership had weakened the party’s position through its political decisions. She suggested that the leadership had focused on political gains instead of finding a practical solution.
The senator also referred to PTI leaders Asad Qaiser and Amir Dogar during her speech. According to Rehman, both leaders had supported taking action against terrorism.
She said the provincial leadership had taken a different approach. Rehman accused it of playing political games and attempting to present itself as politically victimised.
The PPP senator also discussed the government’s proposed draft and the process behind its preparation. She stated that a draft had been sent to the prime minister four times, with amendments included.
Her remarks came during parliamentary discussions on Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution. These provisions concern emergency powers and the constitutional framework for addressing certain situations.
Rehman also clarified the PPP’s position regarding any possible extra-constitutional measures. She rejected the suggestion that her party had agreed to such actions.
She emphasised that the PPP had played a role in shaping the Constitution and remained committed to protecting it. According to her, the party values the constitutional framework and does not support measures outside it.
The senator’s statement highlighted the political differences surrounding the debate. It also reflected the disagreement between the PPP and the PTI over the provincial leadership’s approach to terrorism and the current political situation.
The discussion took place as lawmakers debated the constitutional provisions in a joint sitting of Parliament. Rehman’s comments focused on the importance of constitutional principles and the political choices made by provincial leaders.
