China to Check Arrivals for Mpox Virus

China will monitor arrivals for mpox over the next six months, according to a customs statement released on Friday. This measure follows the World Health Organization’s declaration of mpox as a global health emergency again.

Individuals from countries with monkeypox outbreaks or who show symptoms are advised to declare themselves to Customs. Additionally, vehicles, containers, and goods from affected areas must be sanitized.

The WHO declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years, due to an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo spreading to neighboring regions. Last year, China’s National Health Commission categorized mpox as a Category B infectious disease, allowing for emergency actions such as restricting gatherings and sealing off areas if necessary. Mpox is typically mild but can be fatal in rare cases, with symptoms including flu-like signs and pus-filled lesions.
