In his speech, International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons called for a “revolution of inclusion,” while Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet lauded the enthusiastic crowd as “la public complètement fou.” French President Emmanuel Macron officially declared the Games open, celebrating the continued spirit of the summer of 2024.
The ceremony showcased 500 performers, including Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman, who brought energy and humor to the event. A memorable highlight was French swimmer and model Théo Curin, who has no hands or feet, greeting the audience with, “Welcome to Paris!” The performances also featured South African amputee dancer Musa Motha and stirring renditions of classics like Ravel’s Bolero.
Thomas Jolly, the creative director of Paris 2024, underscored the need for reconciliation between the 15% of the global population with disabilities and society, stating, “Living together better starts with mutual consideration.” The ceremony aimed to challenge societal perceptions of disability through powerful artistic and sporting performances, culminating in the lighting of the Olympic cauldron.
