Shakib Al Hasan’s Bowling Action Ruled Illegal, Suspended from ECB-Run Events

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been suspended from bowling in all events organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) after his bowling action was deemed illegal. Independent testing at Loughborough University confirmed that his elbow extension exceeded the 15-degree limit, making his action illegal for official competition.

The issue came to light during Shakib’s one-off appearance for Surrey in the County Championship against Somerset in September 2024. Umpires had flagged his action, leading to an investigation. Shakib, who claimed nine wickets in that match, will need to undergo reassessment and bring his elbow extension below the threshold to resume bowling in ECB-run events.

This suspension adds to a turbulent period in Shakib’s career, including political controversies and a retirement from T20 internationals. In 2019, he was also handed a two-year ban (with one year suspended) for breaching the ICC’s anti-corruption code.
