Meta Fined €251 Million for Facebook Data Breach, Irish Regulator Says

Facebook

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has been hit with a €251 million ($263 million) fine by Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) over a 2018 data breach. The breach occurred due to a security flaw in the video upload function, which allowed hackers to access around 29 million Facebook accounts globally over two weeks. The compromised personal data included email addresses, phone numbers, and locations.

The DPC criticized Meta for failing to integrate data protection measures during the design phase, which exposed users to significant risks. The breach has led to a series of fines against Meta, as global regulators continue to hold tech companies accountable for data protection failures.

Meta took corrective action shortly after the breach was discovered and reported it to the regulator in September 2018. This latest fine adds to a growing list of penalties faced by Meta for privacy-related issues.
