PTI Leaders Express Disappointment Over Military Court Trials and Political Crisis

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders Asad Qaiser and former president Arif Alvi have voiced strong discontent with the trials and decisions of military courts, citing concerns raised internationally, including by the European Union and the United Kingdom.

Speaking in Peshawar, Asad Qaiser criticized the use of military courts for trying civilians, stating, “We are deeply disappointed with the trials and decisions of military courts. Our concerns are shared globally, with various international bodies raising similar alarms. The right to a fair trial must be upheld, and civilians should not be subjected to military court rulings.”

Qaiser stressed that PTI’s struggle remains focused on upholding the constitution and ensuring the rule of law. He condemned the government for allegedly abusing its authority, which he said was becoming a troubling part of Pakistan’s political history. “We want an independent judiciary, and we stand for civilian supremacy in this country,” he declared.

Qaiser also expressed dissatisfaction over recent government decisions, particularly those restricting peaceful protests, noting that the constitution guarantees the right to protest. He highlighted growing public discontent with the government’s handling of PTI leaders and workers, emphasizing that many believe the cases against PTI’s leadership, including Imran Khan, were politically motivated.

Calling for accountability, Qaiser urged a judicial inquiry into the incidents of May 9 and November 26, which have been key points of conflict between the opposition and the government. He reiterated PTI’s demand for the release of political prisoners, including Imran Khan, and accused the government of unjustly detaining PTI workers.

He confirmed that initial talks between the government and opposition had taken place, with the next round scheduled for January 2, expressing cautious optimism about the negotiations.

Arif Alvi Calls for Immediate Withdrawal of Cases Against PTI

Former president Arif Alvi also addressed the media, calling for the immediate withdrawal of cases against opposition leaders as a necessary first step to resolving the ongoing political crisis. He pointed to the severe financial losses Pakistan has suffered over the past few years, estimating damages at $70 to $80 billion, and attributed the crisis to corruption and mismanagement by the ruling party.

Alvi warned that trying civilians in military courts has drawn international condemnation and risks further damaging Pakistan’s reputation and economic standing. He emphasized the need for foreign investment, which has been severely impacted by the current political situation.

He also criticized the erosion of democratic institutions and the judiciary, accusing the government of sidelining Imran Khan to maintain power. Alvi pointed to the 26th Amendment as a deepening factor in Pakistan’s political instability and reiterated PTI’s stance on fighting corruption and dishonesty, emphasizing the need for systemic change.

Both leaders expressed their commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that Pakistan moves toward a more just and democratic future.
