Punjab Police to Crack Down on Social Media Misuse by Personnel

Punjab’s police authorities have announced a stringent monitoring initiative to regulate the social media activities of police personnel across the province. This decision comes in response to complaints about officers, both in uniform and out of uniform, posting inappropriate and objectionable content related to government institutions on social platforms.

The Additional IG Investigation Punjab has issued a formal letter to regional and district police officials, including Rawalpindi Regional Police Officer (RPO) Babar Sarfraz Alpa, Rawalpindi City Police Officer (CPO) Syed Khalid Hamdani, and other senior officers across Punjab. The letter stresses the importance of monitoring social media content uploaded by police personnel, emphasizing that the Central Police Office had already provided Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for this purpose.

The letter highlights that despite these SOPs, some officers have been posting content deemed inappropriate and illegal, which is considered misconduct under departmental guidelines. To counter this, Public Relations Officers (PROs) at central, regional, and district levels have been tasked with the responsibility of closely supervising police employees’ social media activity. If any inappropriate content is found, immediate departmental action will be taken.

Furthermore, the letter warns that if any content uploaded by officers is reported to authorities without being detected by the assigned PROs, the concerned PROs will also face strict departmental action for negligence. This move aims to prevent the misuse of social media and uphold the discipline and professionalism expected of law enforcement officers.

The monitoring initiative will be reinforced through regular audits and assessments to ensure that police personnel comply with the new regulations. This effort seeks to protect the reputation of the police force and strengthen public trust by holding officers accountable for their actions, both on and off duty.
