ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Science and Technology Khalid Hussain Magsi has called for a detailed report on the collapse of a temporary structure at Comsats University Islamabad (CUI), an incident that narrowly avoided tragedy as faculty members managed to evacuate in time.
The structure, used by the Virtual Campus faculty for hybrid courses, saw its ceiling begin to crumble before a full collapse, prompting those inside to escape. The ministry’s letter, dated April 30, emphasized the need to establish responsibility to prevent future incidents.

The Academic Staff Association (ASA) of CUI voiced strong concerns in a letter to Acting Rector Professor Sajid Qamar, expressing shock and anger over what they described as an avoidable catastrophe that endangered lives and damaged critical infrastructure. They denounced the event as a “fundamental breach of institutional responsibility.”
The ASA has demanded an independent investigation to identify those responsible for the approval, construction, and maintenance of the faulty structure. The faculty also called for a full audit of all university buildings, with publicly disclosed structural integrity certificates to ensure the safety of all campus users.
