Russia Signals Readiness To Ease Strain Between India And Pakistan

In a bid to calm escalating tensions between South Asia’s nuclear-armed neighbors, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has extended an offer to mediate between Pakistan and India. Lavrov conveyed Moscow’s willingness to facilitate dialogue during a phone call with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, days after holding similar discussions with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

The offer comes in the aftermath of the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which claimed at least 26 lives. Lavrov underscored Russia’s readiness to support a political resolution if both Islamabad and New Delhi express mutual interest. Dar, in the call, dismissed India’s accusations against Pakistan as baseless and criticized New Delhi’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, terming it a breach of international law.

Dar also reiterated Pakistan’s proposal for an international, transparent investigation into the recent developments. Lavrov, echoing concern over the volatile situation, urged all parties to exercise diplomacy and restraint to prevent further deterioration.

While Russia has historically maintained close military ties with India, Lavrov’s statements highlight Moscow’s attempt to play a balancing role in the region as tensions continue to rise.
