Khamenei Appoints Pakpour as New IRGC Chief Amid Crisis

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has appointed Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour as the new commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), following the death of General Hossein Salami in Israeli airstrikes.

The appointment was confirmed through an official decree on Friday and broadcast by state media. Pakpour’s elevation comes at a critical time, as Iran reels from a deadly Israeli assault that targeted military and nuclear sites, killing several top Iranian officials.

General Pakpour, previously commander of the IRGC Ground Forces, is seen as a seasoned strategist with deep ties to the Quds Force and significant experience in Iran’s regional military operations, especially in Syria and Iraq.

Salami, who led the IRGC since 2019, was a key architect of Iran’s regional military posture. His death, alongside other senior commanders and scientists, marks a pivotal shift in Iran’s security leadership amid escalating regional tensions.
