Lightning Disaster Kills 33 in Eastern India as Monsoon Rains Intensify

At least 33 people have died after severe lightning strikes hit eastern India during ongoing monsoon rains. The deadly incidents occurred in Bihar between Wednesday and Thursday, according to the state disaster management department.

Most of the victims were farmers and labourers who were working outdoors during the storms. Dozens of others were injured.

Officials expect more lightning and heavy rain in the coming days. A weather alert has been issued for several parts of the state. Authorities have been asked to raise awareness and advise people to take safety precautions during storms.

Bihar’s Disaster Management Minister, Vijay Kumar Mandal, said that warnings have been sent to vulnerable areas. He urged local officials to take extra steps to prevent further loss of life.

The state government has announced compensation of 4 million rupees (about $4,600) for the families of each person who died.

Lightning strikes are common in India during the monsoon season. In Bihar alone, at least 243 people died from lightning in 2024, and 275 were killed the previous year.

Monsoon rains often bring more than just lightning. Eastern states, such as Bihar, frequently suffer from floods during this season. These floods kill dozens and displace thousands of people every year.

Experts say changing weather patterns, deforestation, and lack of safety awareness are increasing the risk of lightning-related deaths.

Officials are urging residents to stay indoors during lightning storms and avoid open fields or tall trees.

The government is also encouraging people to use mobile apps and weather alerts to stay informed during the monsoon.

As rains continue across eastern India, rescue teams and disaster officials remain on high alert. Local authorities are working to provide relief and support to affected families.

This tragedy serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers posed by extreme weather during the monsoon season, particularly for those residing in and working in rural areas.

Severe weather isn’t just hitting India—Heavy rains in Pakistan have also turned deadly, claiming dozens of lives in a single day.
