Jon Stewart has strongly criticized CBS for canceling The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. The comments came during this week’s episode of The Daily Show in a rare, uncensored segment.
Stewart, a long-time friend and former colleague of Colbert, expressed deep frustration over CBS’s decision. He questioned why the network would cancel its top-rated late-night show, especially one with a legacy of over three decades.
“This is not just a business call,” Stewart said, hinting at political pressure behind the move. He referenced the show’s long history and CBS’s recent $8 billion merger, asking if Colbert’s critical stance toward former President Donald Trump played a role.
The episode included harsh criticism of corporate media practices. Stewart accused CBS of choosing “the path of least resistance” to protect financial interests. He also slammed advertisers for fearing backlash tied to political issues.
“Shows like these built a big part of that $8 billion value,” Stewart argued. “And now you’re canceling them.”
Stewart went on to say this likely won’t be the last conflict between CBS and political figures. He pointed to Trump’s ongoing lawsuit against Fox News owner Rupert Murdoch as an example of rising political tension with the media.
The late-night host ended the show with a bold message to media companies that, in his words, “bend the knee” to political power. He said he refuses to back down, even in uncertain times for late-night TV.
CBS officially announced it would cancel The Late Show after the next season. In a statement, executives said the decision was purely financial and not related to Colbert’s performance or content. They called Colbert “irreplaceable” and confirmed the entire Late Show franchise will be retired.
Colbert reacted to the news by telling his live audience, “It is a fantastic job. I wish someone else was getting it.” The crowd responded with boos, and Colbert added, “Yeah, I share your feelings.”
