Former Pakistan head coach and team director Mickey Arthur has expressed doubts about the effectiveness of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan in the T20 format.
Speaking in a recent television interview, Arthur praised both batters but suggested that their playing style may no longer suit the modern demands of T20 cricket.
“Babar and Rizwan are both excellent cricketers,” Arthur stated. “But the game has changed. They are not suited to the current dynamics of T20 cricket.”
Arthur’s remarks come at a time when both players have been left out of Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup. The decision has sparked debate among cricket fans and analysts, with many questioning the long-term roles of the two star batters in the shortest format.
The former coach also praised Pakistan’s current head coach, Mike Hesson, describing him as a leader with a clear vision and strong strategy. Arthur highlighted that Hesson, along with captain Salman Ali Agha, is working to introduce a game plan that reflects the pace and intensity of modern T20 cricket.
Earlier this month, the Men’s National Selection Committee announced squads for both the T20 tri-series and the Asia Cup. Pakistan will compete in a tri-series featuring Afghanistan and UAE at Sharjah Cricket Stadium from 29 August to 7 September.
The Asia Cup T20I tournament will follow in Abu Dhabi and Dubai from 9 to 28 September. Pakistan has been placed in Group A alongside India, Oman, and UAE.
The 17-member squad includes Salman Ali Agha (captain), Shaheen Shah Afridi, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, and other promising talents. Notably, both Babar and Rizwan are absent, marking a significant shift in selection strategy.
Mickey Arthur has long been a respected voice in cricket analysis, and his latest comments underline the changing nature of T20 cricket. His views may fuel further debate as Pakistan looks to adjust its strategies for upcoming tournaments.
