Flour prices have sharply increased across the city, leaving consumers and traders deeply concerned. A 20-kilogram bag now costs up to Rs300 more than before.
According to flour dealers, the rates of both mixed and fine flour have surged. A 20kg bag of mixed flour is now being sold for Rs1,800, while fine flour has reached Rs1,900. Retailers say flour prices have risen by Rs15 to Rs20 per kilogram in recent days.
Dealers have blamed the sudden hike on wheat hoarding. They allege that stockists have purchased large quantities directly from farmers and stored them to create an artificial shortage. Traders warn that flour prices may rise even further if hoarding is not controlled and government action is delayed.
The situation is particularly concerning in Punjab, where wheat and flour prices have risen at an alarming pace. Wheat rates surged by Rs300 within the past week, reaching Rs3,100 per 40kg. Over the past month, wheat costs have jumped by nearly Rs1,000 per 40kg. As a result, flour prices have increased by around Rs500 per 20kg bag during the same period.
Experts and critics have linked this crisis to the Punjab governmentโs decision to step back from regulating the wheat market. They argue that the move has allowed hoarders and speculators to manipulate prices without restrictions.
The rising flour prices have added to the overall inflationary pressure on essential goods. Families already struggling with rising utility and fuel costs now face an even greater burden in managing daily expenses.
Authorities are being urged to take urgent action to curb hoarding, stabilize the market, and ensure that affordable flour remains available for the public.
