BISP Expands Benazir Nashonuma Programme Nationwide

KARACHI: The Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) has rolled out the Benazir Nashonuma initiative across Pakistan to fight child malnutrition and improve maternal health.

The programme focuses on reducing stunting among children under two, tackling anaemia, and addressing micronutrient deficiencies. It also seeks to raise awareness about maternal and child health and encourage greater use of nutrition and health services.

Launched in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP), UNICEF, and WHO, the initiative responds to Pakistan’s alarming malnutrition rates. According to national figures, 40.2% of children are stunted, 28.9% are underweight, and 17.7% suffer from wasting. These numbers place Pakistan among the countries with the highest burden of child malnutrition in the region.

Cash Transfer Support

Under the Benazir Nashonuma scheme, BISP has introduced a Conditional Cash Transfer system to encourage regular health visits and proper nutrition. Each pregnant or lactating woman and each male child under two years will receive Rs2,500 per quarter. Female children under two will receive Rs3,000 per quarter, which includes Rs500 as a transport allowance.

In exchange, mothers must attend antenatal check-ups, participate in awareness sessions, ensure child immunizations, and consume specialized nutritious food provided by the programme. This support is in addition to regular BISP Kafalat payments.

Nutrition and Growth Support

The initiative emphasizes the first 1,000 days of a child’s life as a crucial period for healthy growth and brain development. By providing both financial and nutritional assistance, the programme aims to give children a stronger foundation for the future.

Eligibility and Registration

To qualify for Benazir Nashonuma, women must be enrolled in the BISP Kafalat Programme. Eligible applicants include pregnant or breastfeeding women with children under two years.

Registration is available at Nashonuma Centres in Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) and District Headquarters (DHQ) hospitals. Applicants need to bring their CNIC, the child’s B-Form, and the child’s vaccination card.

With this expansion, the government hopes to combat malnutrition nationwide and ensure healthier futures for mothers and children.
