Two Brothers Diagnosed With Rare Nighttime Paralysis Condition

Two young brothers in Pakistan, called the “solar kids,” have left doctors puzzled with a rare case of nighttime paralysis. The boys, aged nine and 13, appear healthy and active during the day. But after sunset, both lose the ability to move or speak, entering a vegetative state.

Doctors at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad are leading the investigation. Professor Javed Akram explained that the case is a challenge for the medical community. He said, “We are running tests to understand why these children become normal in the day but face paralysis and silence after sunset.”

The government is providing free medical care to the brothers, who belong to a poor family near Quetta in Balochistan. Their father, Mohammad Hashim, revealed that two of his six children died at a young age. His other two children show no unusual health problems.

Extensive tests are being conducted in Islamabad. Blood samples have also been sent abroad for further study. Researchers are collecting soil and air samples from the family’s village to examine possible environmental causes.

Hashim believes sunlight plays a role in his children’s health, claiming they get their energy from the sun. However, doctors dismiss this idea. They point out that the boys can still move during the day even in dark rooms or rainy conditions.

Despite their condition, the brothers remain optimistic. Thirteen-year-old Shoaib Ahmed hopes to become a teacher, while his younger brother Abdul Rasheed dreams of becoming an Islamic scholar.

Medical experts say more research is needed to determine the true cause of their unusual nighttime paralysis. The case has drawn global attention and could provide valuable insights into rare medical disorders.
