President Prabowo Subianto is seeking to elevate Indonesia’s influence on the world stage while deepening ties with U.S. President Donald Trump. His growing international presence was on full display when he joined global leaders at Trump’s Gaza “peace summit” in Egypt earlier this week.
Although Indonesia is geographically distant from the Middle East, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation aims to play a greater role in Gaza’s peace process. According to government officials, Indonesia is prepared to send one of its largest-ever peacekeeping missions and establish long-term humanitarian support for the region.
Ade Padmo Sarwono, Indonesia’s ambassador to Jordan, said his country is “ready and willing to contribute,” noting that aid supplies and volunteers are on standby to enter Gaza once permitted.
The move reflects Prabowo Subianto’s broader foreign policy vision — a departure from Indonesia’s traditionally cautious global approach. Since taking office, Prabowo has emphasized active diplomacy, forging stronger relationships with Middle Eastern and Western leaders alike. Analysts say his close relationship with Trump has also shaped this new direction.
At the summit, Prabowo Subianto was seen conversing with Trump, with reports suggesting the two discussed future cooperation. While details remain unclear, officials confirmed that the pair share a personal friendship and often speak beyond formal diplomatic topics.
Prabowo recently made headlines at the United Nations General Assembly, offering up to 20,000 Indonesian troops for future peacekeeping missions and expressing readiness to recognize Israel — if it recognizes Palestinian statehood. His remarks were praised by Trump, who invited him to a closed-door meeting on Gaza.
Indonesia currently ranks among the top contributors to U.N. peacekeeping missions, with more than 1,000 personnel stationed in Lebanon. Defense officials say preparations are underway should the U.N. authorize deployment to Gaza.
However, experts warn that domestic challenges and limited resources could hinder Indonesia’s ambitions. Still, the president’s assertive diplomacy signals a clear shift in Indonesia’s global role — one that aligns with his goal of strengthening ties with key allies, including Trump.
