The Karachi Traffic Police have officially introduced new speed limits across Karachi in an effort to reduce road accidents and improve traffic discipline. The updated regulations, which take effect immediately, are part of a broader campaign to promote road safety in the city and ensure smoother traffic flow on major routes.
According to a notification from the Karachi Traffic Police, different speed limits have been set for various types of vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, and heavy transport vehicles. The revised speed limits will apply to key arteries such as Sharae Faisal, Lyari Expressway, and Malir Expressway.
For private cars, the new maximum speed limit has been fixed between 60 and 80 kilometers per hour, depending on the road type. Motorcycles will be allowed to travel at a maximum of 50 to 60 km/h, while heavy vehicles such as buses and trucks will need to maintain speeds between 40 and 60 km/h.
Officials stated that digital signboards displaying the new limits will be installed across major intersections and highways. Strict monitoring will also be carried out through speed cameras and traffic patrol units to ensure compliance.
Traffic Police spokesperson SP Tariq Nawaz said that the decision to enforce new speed limits across Karachi was made after a sharp increase in road accidents caused by overspeeding. He added that drivers violating these limits will face heavy fines, license suspension, or even vehicle impoundment in severe cases.
The police also urged citizens to follow traffic rules, wear seat belts, and avoid reckless driving to ensure their own safety and that of others. Awareness campaigns will be launched through social media and public service announcements.
Authorities believe that these new speed limits across Karachi will play a vital role in reducing fatal crashes, ensuring safer roads, and improving the overall traffic environment in Pakistan’s largest city.
