The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a new probe into engine failures affecting several General Motors vehicles.
The investigation involves vehicles equipped with GMโs L87 engines. The affected models include the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Yukon.
The vehicles covered by the probe are from model years 2021 through 2026. Regulators are examining concerns linked to engine failures in these vehicles.
General Motors had already issued a recall to address problems involving the L87 engine. The automaker announced the recall last year after concerns emerged about possible engine failures.
GM attributed the underlying issue to a supplier. The company introduced corrective measures as part of its recall response.
However, the latest probe will examine whether those measures have effectively resolved the problem. NHTSA said its engineering analysis will focus on failures reported after the recall.
The agency will also assess the effectiveness of GMโs repairs and other corrective actions. The review could determine whether additional measures are needed.
The new probe highlights continuing safety concerns involving the L87 engine. Regulators are particularly examining cases where engines reportedly failed after recall repairs.
NHTSA has not indicated that all vehicles covered by the investigation are affected. The agencyโs engineering analysis is intended to establish the scale and cause of the reported failures.
General Motors is among the major automakers whose vehicles are subject to federal safety oversight. Recalls are commonly issued when manufacturers identify safety-related defects.
The latest investigation does not represent a final finding of fault. NHTSA will continue reviewing technical information before reaching conclusions.
The probe could also provide regulators with more information about the original engine problem. It may help determine whether the recall adequately addressed the reported defect.
NHTSA is part of the US Department of Transportation. The agency is responsible for promoting vehicle safety across the United States.
Its responsibilities include developing and enforcing Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The agency also oversees vehicle theft resistance requirements.
NHTSA additionally administers fuel economy regulations under the corporate average fuel economy system. Its investigations can lead to safety recalls or other regulatory action.
For GM vehicle owners, the investigation could bring further attention to the L87 engine issue. Owners should continue following official recall instructions and manufacturer guidance.
The regulatorโs engineering analysis remains ongoing. Further findings from the probe are expected to clarify the extent of post-recall engine failures.
Until the investigation is completed, NHTSA has not announced any additional recall requirement. The agency will use its findings to determine the appropriate next steps.
