ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is preparing to start trial Vehicle Exports to Bangladesh this month. The initial shipment will include 100 locally assembled vehicles.
The exports are planned under an agreement between a Pakistani automaker and a Bangladeshi business group. The arrangement could create a new market for vehicles assembled in Pakistan.
The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding in July. The agreement covers the potential export of up to 5,000 vehicles to Bangladesh.
Under the initial plan, 100 vehicles will be exported during 2026. The trial shipments are scheduled to begin in September.
Larger commercial exports are expected to start next year. The development could strengthen cooperation between Pakistan and Bangladesh’s automotive industries.
Two internationally recognized vehicle models will be included in the initial shipment. Both models are produced in Pakistan through a partnership with China’s SAIC Motor.
Shift From China to Pakistan
According to exporting company CEO Jiang Qiang Shao, the models were previously supplied to Bangladesh from China.
The company later discussed a new business model with SAIC Motor’s headquarters. The discussions resulted in support for shifting production arrangements.
Under the new model, vehicles will be exported from Pakistan in completely knocked down (CKD) form. This will replace the earlier completely built-up (CBU) export model from China.
The CKD arrangement could provide advantages for both countries. The Bangladeshi distributor could potentially lower import duties by receiving vehicles in knocked down form.
Pakistan could also benefit from the arrangement. It may help the country develop a more sustainable automotive export business.
The Pakistani automaker will provide technical support to its Bangladeshi partner. This assistance will cover vehicle assembly and general assembly procedures.
Quality control guidance will also be provided during the process. A local engineering team will travel to Bangladesh to offer technical and engineering support.
Potential for Future Exports
Shao said Pakistan has opportunities to expand its automotive exports over time. He pointed to the country’s cost advantages and skilled workforce.
The Bangladesh agreement could become an important step for the Pakistani automotive sector. It may help establish a long-term export model for locally assembled vehicles.
The initiative could also create opportunities beyond vehicle shipments. Technology transfer and engineering services could become part of future cooperation.
The planned Vehicle Exports could therefore support broader industrial cooperation between Pakistan and Bangladesh. The initial 100-unit shipment will serve as a trial for future commercial activity.
If the trial performs successfully, larger shipments could begin next year. The development may also encourage further investment in Pakistan’s automotive manufacturing and export capabilities.
