SC Grants Approval to Elahi and Sanam as PTI Candidates for Feb 8 Polls

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) received a significant boost as the Supreme Court granted permission to five of its candidates, including party president Parvez Elahi, to contest the upcoming February 8 elections. The court approved appeals filed by Umer Aslam, Major (retd) Tahir Sadiq, Sanam Javaid Khan, and Shukat Basra against the rejection of their nomination papers by returning officers in different constituencies. The decision allows Parvez Elahi, currently in Adiala Jail, to contest from the PP-32 constituency in Gujarat district. The court emphasized the importance of upholding voters’ rights and declared the returning officer’s decision invalid, allowing Elahi to participate in the elections.

Parvez Elahi’s counsel highlighted anomalies in the objections raised by rival candidates and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). The lawyer argued that the objections lacked validity, and the returning officer’s decision to reject Elahi’s nomination papers was questionable. The court acknowledged the importance of facilitating the election process and ensuring that voters are not unjustly deprived of their right to vote. Justice Athar Minallah noted the need for inclusion in the election process, stating that elections should enfranchise people rather than disenfranchise them.

Parvez Elahi had faced objections to his nomination papers, including allegations of concealing assets, non-disclosure of shares in companies, and technical mistakes in documents. The court’s decision underscores the significance of a fair and transparent electoral process. The PTI, facing challenges in the run-up to the elections, sees the court’s decision as a positive development, allowing its candidates to participate in the democratic process. As the election date approaches, political parties are actively engaged in legal battles and campaigning to secure a favorable outcome.

The Supreme Court’s ruling not only benefits Parvez Elahi but also clears the way for other PTI candidates, including Tahir Sadiq, Omer Aslam Awan, Sanam Javaid Khan, and Shukat Basra, to contest elections from their respective constituencies. The decision ensures that the democratic process moves forward with greater inclusivity, providing voters with a broader choice of candidates. Despite ongoing legal and political challenges, the PTI remains optimistic about its electoral prospects, and the court’s decision adds momentum to its campaign efforts. As political dynamics continue to unfold, the upcoming elections in Pakistan are poised to be closely watched for their impact on the country’s political landscape.
