Brushing Mistakes That May Be Staining Your Teeth

Many people brush their teeth regularly but still struggle with yellowing. According to Dr. Ferakh Hamid from Aesthetique Dental Care, two common brushing mistakes could be making the problem worse instead of better.

The first mistake is using a dry toothbrush. Dr. Hamid explains that a dry brush doesn’t allow toothpaste to spread evenly, reducing its cleaning power. Wetting the toothbrush slightly before applying toothpaste helps distribute it more effectively, leading to a better clean and protecting enamel.

Another major mistake is brushing too soon after eating. Consuming acidic foods or drinks like citrus fruits and fizzy drinks softens enamel temporarily. Brushing immediately can erode this protective layer, leading to discoloration over time. Dr. Hamid advises waiting at least an hour before brushing to prevent damage.

Making small adjustments like wetting your toothbrush and waiting after meals can help maintain a whiter and healthier smile. Experts recommend rinsing with water or chewing sugar-free gum in the meantime to neutralize acids and protect your teeth.
