Fans mark the 10-year anniversary of K-Pop band BTS

BTS fans gathered in the heart of South Korean capital Seoul on Monday to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the boy band’s debut. Although the group is now on sabbatical, with two of the members serving mandatory military service, many of its devoted global following known as the “ARMY” gathered in Seoul this week.

The seven-member group has amassed a massive international fan base after paving the way for K-Pop’s global success, including entries in the US music charts and industry accolades. Landmarks such as Seoul City Hall and Namsan Tower were lit purple, BTS’ characteristic hue, and dozens of fans from France, Mexico, and other countries flocked to see the spectacle.

“I came to Korea last week and I am very surprised and excited to see the Namsan Tower purple,” said Rita, a 20-year-old French student who has served in the ARMY since 2018.

Organisations and businesses are also participating in the celebration, with the city of Seoul collaborating with BTS management agency HYBE to organise a tour of BTS-related locations. The South Korean postal service issued commemorative stamps commemorating BTS’ debut anniversary.

Special incentives or events have been introduced by companies such as Hyundai Department Store, Lotte Shopping unit Lotte Cinema, and S-Oil. The celebrations are likely to peak on Saturday, when BTS leader RM is due to visit fans, followed by pyrotechnics near Seoul’s Han River.

“Thank you for teaching us a little, or maybe even too much, about happiness and love,” member JungKook said on Twitter on Sunday. “I’d like to walk with you all for the next ten years as well.”
