Recent developments in Pakistan’s healthcare sector highlight concerns regarding the eligibility of foreign-trained medical graduates to practice in the country. Federal health authorities have communicated with the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), emphasizing the necessity for recognition of alma maters by host countries’ accreditation agencies within a specified timeframe.
Federal Health Secretary Iftikhar Shallwani has drawn attention to the lack of accreditation from host countries among many Pakistani students studying abroad. Consequently, a deadline has been set for institutions to obtain accreditation, failing which the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) will not recognize their degrees.

Shallwani has conveyed these concerns to WFME President Ricardo León-Bórquez, who has pledged full support to PMDC in addressing the issue. This collaboration underscores the importance of international cooperation in upholding healthcare standards.
