Karachi Begins Citywide Drain Cleaning Campaign Ahead of Monsoon Season

KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has started a large-scale drain cleaning campaign to strengthen the city’s Monsoon preparedness and reduce the risk of urban flooding before heavy rains arrive.

The operation focuses on cleaning major storm water drains across Karachi. Officials said the campaign is intended to improve the drainage system and help rainwater flow more efficiently during the Monsoon season.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab visited the Hijrat Colony drain near PIDC Colony on Monday to inspect the ongoing desilting and cleaning work. Municipal Commissioner Abrar Jaffer and other senior KMC officials accompanied him during the visit.

During the inspection, the Senior Director of Municipal Services briefed the mayor on the progress of the campaign. Officials explained the measures being taken to complete the work before heavy rainfall begins.

Speaking to the media, Mayor Wahab said the primary goal of the campaign is to improve Karachi’s Monsoon preparedness and minimize the problems caused by waterlogging. He said timely cleaning of drains is essential to protect roads, residential areas, and public infrastructure during periods of heavy rain.

The mayor noted that Karachi experienced relatively better conditions during last year’s rainy season due to preventive measures taken in advance. He said the KMC plans to build on those efforts and improve its overall performance this year.

Wahab instructed all relevant departments to accelerate the cleaning of major storm water drains throughout the city. He stressed that the work should be completed before the arrival of heavy rains to ensure the drainage system functions effectively.

According to the mayor, every possible effort will be made to reduce inconvenience for residents during the rainy season. He emphasized that proper planning and timely execution are necessary to prevent flooding in low-lying areas.

He also warned that negligence or unnecessary delays in completing assigned tasks would not be accepted. Officers found responsible for poor planning or slow progress could face strict disciplinary action.

The drain cleaning campaign is part of Karachi’s annual preparations for the rainy season. Authorities believe that regular desilting and maintenance of drainage channels can significantly reduce the impact of heavy rainfall on daily life.

Residents have also been urged to cooperate by avoiding the disposal of garbage into storm water drains, as blocked drainage systems can increase the risk of flooding during the Monsoon. Officials said public cooperation, along with timely government action, will play an important role in ensuring a safer and more manageable rainy season for Karachi.
