Karachi Raises Speed Limit on Shahrah-e-Faisal to Improve Traffic Flow

KARACHI: The Karachi Traffic Police have revised the speed limit on Shahrah-e-Faisal to improve traffic movement. The decision was announced on Saturday, according to a report by ARY News.

A notification issued by the DIG Traffic Office confirmed the updated speed limit for different types of vehicles. Officials said the change aims to balance smoother traffic flow with better road safety.

Under the new rules, heavy transport vehicles (HTVs), including buses and trucks, must follow a strict speed limit of 30 km/h. Meanwhile, cars, light transport vehicles (LTVs), and motorcycles can now travel at a maximum speed of 70 km/h on the road.

In a statement shared on social media, Sindh Police explained the purpose behind the revised limits. The authorities believe that adjusting the speed limit will help reduce congestion and lower the risk of accidents in busy areas.

Citizens have been urged to follow the updated rules carefully. Traffic police warned that violations of the speed limit could lead to fines and legal action. They also stressed that public cooperation is necessary to maintain order on major roads like Shahrah-e-Faisal.

It is important to note that previous limits were slightly lower. In November last year, light vehicles and motorcycles were allowed to travel at 60 km/h, while heavy vehicles remained restricted to 30 km/h. The latest update reflects a small increase for lighter vehicles to support better traffic flow.

In a related development, the Sindh High Court (SHC) has also taken up matters linked to traffic enforcement. The court recently directed authorities to submit responses regarding petitions against the e-challan system.

During the hearing, it was revealed that several key officials had not yet submitted their replies. These include the Chief Secretary, Secretary of Local Government, DG KDA, and the Mayor. Only the Transport Department has responded so far.

Lawyer Tariq Mansoor, representing public concerns, stated that the petitions focus on road safety issues. However, the court has currently marked them as non-admissible.

The Transport Department informed the court that the e-challan system has improved road discipline. Officials claimed it has reduced traffic accidents by 40 percent. They also noted a sharp increase in fines, with penalties rising significantly in 2023 compared to previous years.
