Lahore’s traffic authorities have escalated their efforts to curb repeat traffic violations, issuing a substantial fine of over Rs 50,000 to a vehicle with 108 recorded offenses under the city’s e-challan system. The driver, caught on Mall Road, was found to have violated traffic signals 80 times, lane discipline 19 times, and seatbelt rules on nine occasions.
Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Amara Athar emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and warned that drivers with outstanding e-challans would be denied access to essential police services, including driving licenses, character certificates, and verifications. A parallel crackdown is underway on vehicles with tampered number plates used to evade fines.

The crackdown coincides with the recent introduction of AI-based e-challans in Punjab, an initiative aimed at enhancing road safety. Operation Commander Muhammad Shafique Ahmad of Punjab Safe City explained that this system, launched under Chief Minister Maryum Nawaz’s leadership, leverages artificial intelligence to detect 19 types of traffic violations, including wrong-side driving and speeding. The first phase prioritized violations such as not wearing helmets and seat belts, while the second phase extended to cover 24 different traffic rules.
