PMD Warns of Intense Heatwave in Punjab From Late April

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a forecast warning about rising temperatures across Punjab. The department expects a period of intense heatwave conditions starting in late April. The hot weather is likely to continue through June.

Officials say temperatures will rise above normal levels in many regions. South Punjab and surrounding areas may face the most severe impact. The intense heatwave could lead to prolonged hot and dry conditions across the province.

According to the seasonal outlook, temperatures may stay above average until May 2026. Some regions could experience heat levels 4 to 6 degrees Celsius higher than normal. These conditions may trigger repeated heatwave events during the season.

April is expected to be slightly warmer than usual. Temperatures may remain 1 to 2 degrees above normal. However, conditions are expected to worsen in May as heat levels continue to rise. This phase may mark the beginning of an intense heatwave pattern in several cities.

In May, temperatures could increase by 2 to 3 degrees above normal. By June, some areas of Punjab may experience extreme heat. Forecasts suggest temperatures could reach 45 to 46 degrees Celsius in parts of the province.

Major cities like Lahore may also face severe conditions. Urban heat effects can make temperatures feel even higher. In May, Lahore’s temperature is expected to range between 42 and 45 degrees Celsius. This will add to the pressure of the intense heatwave across urban areas.

The PMD defines a heatwave as a period when temperatures reach 42 degrees Celsius or more. Long exposure to such weather can increase health risks, especially for vulnerable groups.

Officials have also warned that late April may already see temperatures near 38 degrees Celsius. The risk of stronger heatwaves will increase in May and June. Some regions may even experience temperatures above 44 degrees Celsius during peak summer months.

Overall, the country is expected to face a challenging weather period. The upcoming intense heatwave may affect daily life, agriculture, and energy demand across Punjab.
