Punjab to Preserve Pre-Partition Schools as Heritage Sites

The Punjab Education Department has taken a significant step towards preserving history by approving a project to designate pre-Partition-era government schools as historical heritage sites. Under this initiative, the schools will undergo restoration and preservation to protect their architectural and cultural legacy. The move marks an effort to revive the historical importance of these institutions and ensure their longevity.

A circular issued by the Punjab secretary of school education has been dispatched to the chief executive officers of district education authorities and district education officers in all 41 districts. The directive calls for the collection of comprehensive data on these schools, including their construction dates, brief history, and current facilities like classrooms, auditoriums, and staff rooms. Additionally, the circular seeks information on current student enrollment, the condition of the buildings, and whether any school land is illegally occupied.

The initiative prioritizes schools built during the British colonial era, with special funds allocated for their renovation. These schools will be declared model institutions, and immediate steps will be taken to address staffing shortages. The project aims not only to restore the physical structures but also to enhance the capacity of these schools to accommodate more students.

Furthermore, alumni who have excelled in various fields and hold prestigious positions will be celebrated as part of this initiative. The goal is to showcase the rich legacy and contributions of these historic institutions while encouraging future generations to continue the tradition of excellence.
